Dirty Secrets of the Supplement Industry #2 - Tasty Supplements

Everyone loves a delicious treat - especially if it is good for you!  In the supplement industry, certain products attain hugely successful sales figures through superior taste, not superior quality.  The relationship between taste and successful sales of supplements leads to several unfortunate tendencies.

First, formulators are more preoccupied with the taste of a product than its efficacy.  Instead of spending money and time researching and developing effective formulas, they spend their resources developing formulas that taste good and sell well.  This would be great if supplement manufacturers were making Twinkies, where the goal of the product is delectable minute-market satisfaction.  But supplements shouldn’t be designed like your average pre-packaged food; they should be designed to accomplish a specific goal, first and foremost.

With all the focus on the taste of a product, it is no wonder that supplements are jam-packed with an array of useless ingredients.  Artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and additional salts, often meander their way onto the ingredients list to enhance the taste.  We take supplements for our health and quality of life.  Last time I checked, junk food ingredients did little good for either one.

The supplement industry’s emphasis on taste detracts from the supplements you purchase.  It detracts from the resources invested in the product, in the quality of the product, and the relationship between product goals and effectiveness.
